Representative Matters

  • California Restaurant Association (CRA). Secured a precedent-setting victory on behalf of the CRA in the “gas ban on stoves” case against the City of Berkeley. The Ninth Circuit reversed the District Court’s ruling and held that Berkeley’s ban on natural gas hookups is preempted by federal law and therefore invalid. The win earned the RJLF team The AmLaw Litigation Daily’s “Litigator of the Week” runners-up recognition, and the case garnered extensive national attention from major news outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Bloomberg, and Reuters, among others.

  • Arconic. Represented Arconic in trade secret and antitrust case in the Western District of Pennsylvania. The case involved claims that Novelis misappropriated Arconic’s trade secrets in a pretreatment process for aluminum sheet used in Ford’s popular F-150 pickup truck by publishing them in a patent application. Novelis asserted counterclaims alleging breach of contract and antitrust law claims.

  • Arconic. Represented Arconic in multi-hundred-million-dollar claim against Universal Alloy Corporation for the theft of trade secrets used for the manufacture of critical aircraft wing components for Boeing. The representation included defense of antitrust counterclaims.

  • Southern California Gas Company. Represent SoCalGas in connection with indoor air quality, clean energy, and issues relating to state and local government actions concerning natural gas.

  • Alcoa. Represented Alcoa Inc. in defense of a case brought by the State of North Carolina concerning ownership rights to North Carolina’s second-largest river system and the right to control four hydroelectric dams on the Yadkin River. The State alleged that it owned these dams under a constitutional navigability doctrine. Alcoa prevailed at trial and the State’s allegations of ownership were extinguished.
